How Sclerotherapy Works
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat spider veins and certain small varicose veins.
During treatment, a specialized solution is injected into the affected vein, causing it to close. Over time, the treated vein is gradually absorbed by the body, and its appearance may fade.
The procedure is typically performed in-office without surgical incisions or general anesthesia. Treatment time depends on the number and size of veins being addressed.
Who Is Sclerotherapy For?
- Visible spider veins
- Small blue or purple veins
- Certain smaller varicose veins
- Residual visible veins following previous treatment
- Cosmetic concerns about the appearance of their legs
If you also experience aching, swelling, or leg heaviness, our team may recommend additional testing to determine whether an underlying vein condition is present.
A personalized evaluation helps determine whether sclerotherapy or another treatment option is most appropriate.

SCLEROTHERAPY QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions About Sclerotherapy
How much does sclerotherapy cost?
Cost depends on the number of veins and sessions, and on whether treatment is medical or cosmetic. We give you an estimate at your consultation.
What are the downsides of sclerotherapy?
Mostly mild, temporary bruising, redness or brown spots. Rarely, small lumps or itching can occur.
Is sclerotherapy covered by insurance?
It may be covered when medically necessary, for example if veins are causing pain or swelling. Cosmetic-only treatment is usually not covered.
What are the alternatives?
For larger or deeper veins, options may include VenaSeal™, Varithena® or radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Dr. Rizk will explain which approach fits your veins.
Does it hurt?
Most patients feel little to no pain, usually a mild pinch or stinging at the injection site.
