What Is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which lymph fluid builds up, usually in an arm or leg, when the lymphatic system is compromised. It causes swelling, discomfort and heaviness.

Surgery, radiation, infection or genetics can contribute, and cancer treatment can raise your risk. There is no cure, but compression, exercise and specialized massage can help manage symptoms.

When to Seek an Evaluation

Diagnosis may include a physical exam, blood work and ultrasound or other imaging to assess circulation.

JACKSONVILLE LYMPHEDEMA QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Lymphedema

Answers to common questions about causes, symptoms and care.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by a build-up of lymph fluid, usually in the arms or legs, when the lymphatic system is damaged or not working well.

Surgery, radiation therapy, infection and an inherited tendency can all contribute.

Built-up fluid presses on tissues, nerves and blood vessels and stretches the skin, which can cause pain, tightness and heaviness.

See us if leg pain does not improve with rest, limits your activity, or comes with swelling, visible veins, shortness of breath or skin color changes.
